Bring back my monies to me, to me
Got a call from Highpoint (the Acer service center) and it's official: my laptop's motherboard is busted. Worse, they don't have any spare parts to replace it, so it's bye-bye Choutan. It has served me well for 3 years though, so I feel more than a little regretful about having to replace it. Thanks for all your hard work, Choutan; I had been looking forward to another few years with you. T____T

Acer did offer some trade-in options; 7 of them, in fact. All are worth at least RM1K though, with the most recommended one being RM2K+. Granted, the latter's original price is RM3K+, but wooooo, my monies. I NEED TO BE FRUGAL, DAMMIT - NEXT TERM'S FEES ARE ALREADY KNOCKING ON MY DOORSTEP. T____________T

(Thanks for all the tech-translations and help, [info]slay_x! Seriously, I really, really appreciate it. T^T)

So, I'm going to ponder over my choice for a bit - according to Victor, the cheaper ones are at least 2x better than Choutan and the two most expensive ones 10x better (for an extra RM1K that I could use for other things). Doesn't help that the logical side of my brain says 'GO, GO TO THE MOUNTAIN FOR THE MOST EFFICIENT LAPTOP' but the other side is hanging on for dear life to my wallet.

And of course, there is that neglected half of my hemisphere going 'WTF ARE YOU DOING TALKING ABOUT LAPTOPS; YOUR MORAL FINALS ARE TOMORROW AND YOU HAVEN'T EVEN MEMORIZED THE 12 HINDU VALUES, WTF D8<'

...*headdesks fervently*

(Lacking a frustrated icon, you guys can have emo Hirai Ken instead.)

*patpat* Go for the cheapest option and just get done with it?

Currently choosing between the most expensive of the cheap sets and the second most exp one - 10x more powerful vs. price is a tough call to make.

If you are running Windows Vista, you won't see a performance increase anyway. Go with whatever option offers Windows XP. (It's Malaysia. There's gotta be a way to do that.)

Urgh. Talk about a performance hog. Don't think, "OMG my computer's so powerful 2GB RAM *_*". Because most of the RAM will be used on Vista itself. Better to get a cheaper (and less powerful) machine and run XP. It'll be _faster_.

Also, more programs will be compatible in XP. You may need to get a lot of new software if you upgrade to Vista. Don't count on your hardware working, eiither--a friend ([info]cienna) had to buy a new scanner because her old one wouldn't work with Vista no matter what she did.

Oooh, OUCH. I'll try to see if Acer can switch the Vista to XP (because unfortunately, almost all the options do come with Vista).

Make it XP, or avoid it. Not worth your money. *hugs*

for you, cheapest option should be good. but preferably go for one with a dedicated graphics card (look for ATI (in white and red) or nVIDIA (in white and green))
That will forever eliminate the problem of viewing insanely large movies.

Note tho:
If youre planning to go for Vista, you need MINIMUM 1 gigabyte, PREFERRED 2 gigabytes of RAM.
2.0 gHz CPU frequency is the norm now. Take nothing less.

However, laptops like these, they can come cheap. And unless you push your computer to the very boundaries of full 3D gaming acceleration, a decent comp goes for normal selling price 2000. If youre trading in, you may only need to add 1k.

Lets face it, we aint rich. Or else we would be across the oceans in a four seasons land (where the McDonalds may sell pork burgers)

Hear, hear. Though even if I were rich, I might just decide to stay right where I am, thank you very much. >D

Checked your comment against the offers; the graphics card all seem okay. I've heard a lot of flak about Vista though - is it that bad? O___+

lets put it this way: its resource hungry.

i run a vista. It looks nice and all, but...
its ALWAYS using 1 GB of RAM,
its almost useless unless i crank the CPU speed to maximum (which slashes my battery life in half to just 1 hour rather than 2 hours on power saving)

on the plus side, if your computer CAN handle vista, its nice to tinker around with. Even comes with voice commands (very buggy tho).

But at what cost? 3.8 thousand.
But since it Ati Radeon graphics powered (with 512 video RAM), i can go 1280 x 720 scale movies without any lagg (unless i crank PS and my firefoxes while i'm at it)

Go with whatever has XP--there were no options without Vista for me, so I had to get a mac, but you should be able to find one if you dig enough?
